Carinda hotel was used in the David Bowie film clip for Let’s Dance. Amanda and I called in to Carinda Hotel and we absolutely and totally loved the place.

About The Carinda Hotel

Years ago I was sitting on the lounge early one Sunday morning watching Rage and the film clip for David Bowies “Let’s Dance” came on and being a lover of both Bowie and country pubs I decided to look up where it was with the view to going there one of these days.

The hotel from the film clip is in a small town called Carinda, about 70ks from Walgett NSW. Amanda and I called in to Carinda Hotel and we loved the place. You could feel the history inside, it’s old, it’s a bit dishevelled but you wouldn’t want to change a single thing about it. Throw the David Bowie history in to the mix and well, just go there and see. I bet you can feel something. I did.

The Carinda Hotel publican Leanne was a lovely lady, very welcoming. The beers were icy cold and the lunch was bloody awesome. You can camp for free out the back of the pub, or if that’s full (pretty unlikely) there’s also free camping down the road at the showground. Well done Carinda and Carinda Hotel, the place is a 10 out of 10.

Let’s Dance Carinda Festival

The small rural town pays an annual tribute to legendary musician David Bowie when it hosts the annual Let’s Dance Carinda Festival over the October long weekend.

Up to 800 people are expected to attend Carinda Hotel for the next Let’s Dance Carinda Festival.

Let’s Dance Carinda Tribute Committee are in the throes of putting together a wonderful time for everyone to enjoy and hopefully lift the morale in the drought-stricken country.

Committee secretary Joy Dare said the inaugural event attracted about 200 people.

“Then there was about 450 people at the second event (in 2017) and this year we’re hoping it builds up to 800 people,” she said.

“People who couldn’t make it last year told us that they were sorry and are hoping to attend this year.”

Carinda Races

Carindas’ biggest event of the year is its picnic race meeting held each July. Carinda and District Race Club has been racing since 1915 and stages a six race meeting every July. Marree & We Explore Around Farina A Bit More

We drove 60 kilometres up to Marree for a look around. Again it was very good gravel road all the way. Marree is where both the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks start so we will be going through there again one day for sure.

We had some lunch at the Marree Hotel. It’s was a very nice old hotel and our lunches were great. The chef was a nice young bloke out here from Canada. He was staying for about three months at Marree and then he was off somewhere else.

Ghan Railway Relics At Marree

After lunch we went across the road to check out the collection of old Ghan Railway stuff they have on display at the disused station and park. We had a chat with some people who were heading off up the Oodnadatta Track on their way to Darwin. It would have been great to have had another month off work so we could go too. Some other time for sure.

Looking Around Marree

The town of Marree itself is very small. They have a health services station, a caravan park, a pub and a roadhouse so they pretty much cover everything you’d need when out bush. We filled up at the roadhouse and bought some basic supplies including more insect repellent – you tend to use a lot of it out this way! On the way back we very almost ran over an emu who decided to jump out in front of us. Luckily I didn’t have the van on and was able to brake in time. It was all a bit much for poor old Graciee as she slid off the back seat and on to the floor. It was pretty funny although I don’t think Graciee saw it the same way..

Farina Underground Bakery

Once we got back to Farina we went for a bit more of an explore around. We had a look at the famous underground bakery. We were there about a month too early for it to be open which was a shame. Maybe another time. Farina really is a cool old town. It’s surprising to see just how fast it has gone to ruins as all of the buildings were seemingly strongly built out of local stone. For example the police station and post office were in use up until about 1960. In the last 60 years they have all but fallen apart. Perhaps a lot of the roofing timbers and flooring was pilfered for use elsewhere or for campfires maybe?

Camping At Farina

Farina was really one of the better places we have camped. I recommend it highly to anyone who can get out there. If you are expecting a Big4 caravan park type experience then give it a miss. If you are like us and love the Aussie Outback and bush camping then add it to your bucket list.

Getting To Marree And Farina

Marree is at the junction of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks 655km north of Adelaide SA. Farina is about 50km south of Marree. If you leave Lyndhurst SA and head north towards Marree you drive right past Farina. Road conditions can vary greatly in the outback. It’s always a good idea to check conditions before you travel. Check conditions by calling the Marree Hotel or looking up https://www.dit.sa.gov.au/OutbackRoads.

We Drive From Moree To Lightning Ridge Via Walgett

we drive to Lightning Ridge via Moree and Walgett. Moree looked like a much nicer town than I had imagined it would be. We saw cotton plantations and huge bales of cotton in some paddocks, the paddocks and scale of everything out here is completely enormous.

Pack up was easy as we had no annexe to deal with today. Drove to Lightning Ridge via Moree and Walgett. Moree looked like a much nicer town than I had imagined it would be. We were very surprised, it goes to show that you should go and have a look at these places yourselves and not just listen to the rubbish people say about them. Welcome To Lightning Ridge

Paddocks stretch to the horizon. We saw emus on the side of the road when we got nearer to Lightning Ridge, neither Amanda or myself have ever seen emus in the wild before. They are massive birds, bigger than they seem to be in zoos. We arrived at Lightning Ridge and set up camp at the Black Opal caravan park. It’s unusual in that the surface of the entire park is some kind of pea gravel that is compacted so hard that the office lend you a huge hammer drill so you can drill holes for your pegs.

The camp has a couple of comedian/bush poets called Mel and Susie doing evening shows so we went and watched. They are both awesome. They are a couple of ladies who travel the country doing shows out of their travel bus. They are excellent > http://www.melandsusieontour.com.au/.
